Amy Gillett Rail Trail (Bikeway)

21.84 kmFully sealed the entire way, gentle grades typical of an old railway line - suitable for families, children and novice riders.Oakbank to Birdwood

Named in memory of Amy Gillett, the South Australian track cyclist and rower killed during a 2005 training ride in Germany. Follows the former Mount Pleasant railway line through the Adelaide Hills, linking Oakbank, Woodside, Charleston, Mount Torrens and Birdwood. Fully sealed with gentle grades throughout, ideal for children and novice riders, and open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Built in stages: Oakbank-Woodside (2010), Woodside-Charleston (2011), Charleston-Mount Torrens (2014), and the newest Mount Torrens-Birdwood section (opened November 2025). A final stage (Birdwood to Mount Pleasant, ~8.4km) is still under discussion between the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Councils, not yet built. Toilets and picnic facilities at Woodside, Charleston, Mount Torrens and Birdwood (home of the National Motor Museum). A December 2019 bushfire affected the surrounding hills and valleys, with the community and vegetation recovering well since.

Oakbank to Woodside (approx. 5km): probably the busiest section, with a trail hub just out of Oakbank - a bicycle maintenance stand is located at the BMX/MTB track on Station Rd, Woodside. Woodside to Charleston (approx. 5km): through scenic Adelaide Hills countryside. Charleston to Mount Torrens (approx. 7km): continues through rolling farmland. Mount Torrens to Birdwood (approx. 6km, opened November 2025): the newest section, finishing at Birdwood, home to the National Motor Museum.
