Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail - Burnett River Bridges (Gayndah to Mundubbera)

33.2 kmRailway ballast, loose sand, coarse gravelGayndah to Mundubbera

The southernmost open section of the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail, an ambitious 270+ km trail under staged development along the old Mungar-Monto-Calliope inland railway loop (built in stages 1889-1931, last regular train 2002). This section follows the Burnett River for most of its length via a remarkable variety of heritage-listed timber, concrete and steel-trestle railway bridges -- none currently open to trail traffic, so temporary bypasses (some steep and rough) exist at each one. Gayndah and Mundubbera are Queensland's citrus capitals. Developed largely by volunteers; opened in stages from 2022.

GPX-measured 33.2 km, closely matching the official Mt Debateable-Mundubbera figure of 30.4 km plus the Dirnbir/Gayndah-end approach. Official RTA sections: Reid Creek-Mt Debateable (7 km, access via Mt Debateable Station site off Gayndah-Mundubbera Rd, ~10 km west of Gayndah) and Mt Debateable-Mundubbera (30.4 km). Surface varies from hard-packed railway ballast to loose sand and mud, with significant soft sandy sections and difficult gully crossings -- mostly only suitable for fit mountain bikers, walkers and horse riders; cyclists should carry puncture repair kits (multiple reviewers report punctures from sharp flinty stones). Numerous gates, especially towards Mundubbera. No toilets or drinking water along the trail. Passes at least seven named heritage bridges (Humphery/Humphrey, Roth's, Faith, Boomerang, Anderson's Gully, Slab Creek, Red Gully) plus Boomerang and Dirnbir sidings -- Slab Creek and Philpott Creek bridges have been re-decked and fenced as of 2025, removing what was previously a 4 km detour at Philpott Creek. Koalas have been seen in the eucalypt forest near the river. Gayndah is the closest town to the trail's Gayndah end and has most facilities, including free camping at the former railway station. Camping is also available at Mundubbera Showgrounds. The Mundubbera railway station is now a small historical museum with a good bakery cafe in town for coffee and food.
