Barossa Rail Trail

39.4 kmSealed (hot mix bitumen); short on-road sections through TanundaGawler to Angaston

A scenic shared-use trail through the heart of the Barossa Valley wine region, linking Gawler, Lyndoch, Rowland Flat, Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Angaston. Only part of the corridor is a true rail trail (Tanunda-Nuriootpa and, best of all, the 7 km Nuriootpa-Angaston section on the old rail easement) — the rest is sealed shared path, some of it on-road through town centres, built progressively since 1992 with the newest extension (Kalbeeba to Gawler East) opened in 2022. Passes directly through and past numerous wineries and cellar doors (including Jacobs Creek and Kies Family Wines) and finishes at the Barossa Adventure Station in Angaston, a purpose-built recreation precinct on the old rail yards.

Official section distances (Rail Trails Australia): Gawler-Lyndoch 16 km, Lyndoch-Rowland Flat 5.6 km, Rowland Flat-Tanunda 9.4 km, Tanunda-Nuriootpa 6 km, Nuriootpa-Angaston 7 km (total ~44 km; RTA's summary figure is 43 km). Consistently flagged by riders as the two hardest sections: the on-road stretch through Tanunda (busy, urban speeds, cars parked in the bike lane near the centre), and the hilly, switchback-heavy section between Rowland Flat and Tanunda alongside the North Para River (short steep climbs, two stock grids). By contrast, the Nuriootpa-Angaston stretch, the only substantial section on the original rail easement, is widely rated the best part of the whole trail — smooth hot-mix bitumen, metal sculptures, information boards, and the old Nuriootpa turning triangle (not a turntable) still visible, crossed twice by the path. Toilets and picnic facilities are provided at Lyndoch, Tanunda, Nuriootpa and Angaston. The Gawler end starts about 3-5 km from Gawler/Gawler Central train stations via a signed on-road link through the Council carpark.
