Brisbane Valley Rail Trail
161.2 kmSealed sections, gravel and dirt (varies by section; gentler/farmland in south, steeper/forested in north)Wulkuraka to Yarraman
The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) is Australia's longest rail trail at 161 km, following the former Brisbane Valley railway line (1884-1990s) from Wulkuraka, near Ipswich, north through the Somerset Region to Yarraman in the Toowoomba Region. Comprising 11 sections and 27 former railway stations, it passes through Fernvale, Lowood, Coominya, Esk, Toogoolawah, Moore, Linville, Benarkin and Blackbutt before finishing at Yarraman Station Park. The trail starts near sea level at Wulkuraka and climbs the Great Dividing Range to finish around 500 m above sea level at Yarraman, with the steepest climbing in the northern Blackbutt-Yarraman section. It suits walkers, touring cyclists, e-bike riders and horse riders, and is popular as a multi-day supported tour with shuttle services covering the full length.
Surface is a mix of sealed sections, gravel and dirt, generally gently undulating through farmland in the southern half, with steeper, more forested terrain between Linville and Yarraman. Wider tyres than a standard road bike are recommended. Heritage-listed features include the Lockyer Creek Railway Bridge (between Lowood and Coominya) and the Yimbun Railway Tunnel (between Toogoolawah and Harlin, built 1909-10, the only tunnel on the line). Official section breakdown (11 sections, totalling 161 km, confirmed via the Qld DTMR trail brochure): Wulkuraka-Fernvale 23 km, Fernvale-Lowood 8 km, Lowood-Coominya 12 km, Coominya-Esk 24 km, Esk-Toogoolawah 19 km, Toogoolawah-Harlin 14 km, Harlin-Moore 13 km, Moore-Linville 7 km, Linville-Benarkin 17 km, Benarkin-Blackbutt 5 km, Blackbutt-Yarraman 19 km.
