Camperdown to Port Campbell Rail Trail

58.83 kmCoarse gravel, compacted earth and disused railway line on the Camperdown-Timboon rail trail proper (with a short unavoidable on-road section leaving Camperdown); wide, well-compacted gravel shared path on the Twelve Apostles Trail from Timboon to Port Campbell. Horses are not permitted between Merretts Rd and Curdies River.Camperdown to Port Campbell

Follows the former Timboon railway line (opened 1892, closed 1986) from Camperdown across the volcanic plains of the Corangamite Shire to Timboon, continuing on to the coast at Port Campbell via the separate Twelve Apostles Trail - together sometimes referred to as the 'Crater to Coast' route. Passes farmland, temperate rainforest along Limestone Creek, several restored timber trestle bridges, and the impressive Curdies River trestle bridge, before the final coastal stretch to Port Campbell. IMPORTANT: only the Camperdown-Timboon section (approx. 41km per RTA) is the heritage rail trail proper, on the old railway alignment. The remaining approx. 20km from Timboon to Port Campbell is the Twelve Apostles Trail, a separately-funded and separately-named shared path that RTA explicitly describes as 'not a rail trail' - see errata for detail. Included here as one continuous entity per the uploaded GPX, matching how the ride is actually done in practice.

Camperdown to Naroghid (approx. 8-11km depending on route taken): on-road start; the 'recommended' route via Fenton St/Park Lane/Sadlers Rd is hillier but scenic (two climbs past the volcanic crater lakes), while the flatter alternative via Camperdown-Cobden Rd (C164) is shorter and busier with traffic - this GPX recorded the shorter route. Naroghid to Cobden (approx. 7km): shared path through farmland. Cobden to Glenfyne (approx. 11km): trail crosses the Cobden Golf Club course, then follows the Cobden-Warrnambool Rd corridor. Glenfyne to Curdies River (approx. 7km): scenic bush section along Limestone Creek with several low-level bridges. Curdies River to Timboon (approx. 5km): crosses the restored Curdies River trestle bridge. Timboon to Port Campbell (approx. 19.5-20km, Twelve Apostles Trail): well-compacted gravel shared path running mostly parallel to the Great Ocean Road, via Paaratte Recreation Reserve (toilets, bike repair station, roughly halfway), finishing via a swing bridge over Port Campbell Creek or a roadside path into town.
