East Gippsland Rail Trail
146.99 kmSealed from Bairnsdale to Nicholson; hard-packed gravel from Nicholson to Newmerella; sealed shared path into Orbost. The Lakes Entrance link is mountain-bike only.Bairnsdale to Orbost
A 96km rail trail from Bairnsdale to Orbost following the old Bairnsdale-Orbost railway past farmland, tall forest, rivers and floodplains, over historic timber trestle bridges with views of the Gippsland Lakes, finishing near the Snowy River. This track also includes the out-and-back link to Lakes Entrance (the Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail), traced twice, so the measured distance of 146.99km is roughly 50km more than the 96km rail trail itself.
Bairnsdale (Howitt Park) to Nicholson, about 8km, sealed. Nicholson to Bruthen, about 20km, hard-packed gravel. Bruthen to Nowa Nowa, about 30km, a steady climb through forest to Colquhoun with the Stony Creek Trestle Bridge just before Nowa Nowa; the link to Lakes Entrance leaves the trail in Colquhoun Forest and is suitable for mountain bikes only. Nowa Nowa to Orbost, about 38km, has no towns, so stock up first. The rail trail ends at Newmerella; a 2km shared path continues to Orbost.
