High Country Rail Trail

82.79 kmPaved and gravel from Wodonga to Tallangatta, with half-sealed sections; rough ballast from Old Tallangatta to Bullioh; rough gravel from Bullioh to Shelley (mountain bikes only).Wodonga to Shelley

A rail trail along the former Cudgewa railway line from Wodonga, around the shore of Lake Hume to Tallangatta, then up through farmland and forest to Shelley, the former highest railway station in Australia. Easy riding on the lake shore, with gravel and half-sealed surfaces, then a long climb on rough surfaces towards Shelley. The trail is planned to reach Corryong eventually (about 112km in all).

Wodonga to Old Tallangatta is the easier section: about 30km follows the foreshore of Lake Hume (gravel, with half-sealed sections near Tallangatta), with historic trestle bridges and Lake Hume lookouts. From Old Tallangatta the trail turns to rough ballast to Bullioh (about 15km) and rough gravel on to Shelley (about 20km), a long gradual climb of easy grades to about 779m; the surface east of Bullioh is mountain-bike standard. There are no facilities from Tallangatta to Koetong, so carry food and water; the Koetong Pub has refreshments. The operator (Parklands Albury Wodonga) has reported the trail closed on all sections east of Granya Road, Bullioh, due to hazards - check their website before riding. Measured track length is 82.79km; sources quote about 80km.
