Hamilton-Coleraine Rail Trail
39.78 kmUnsealed former railway formation: dirt, grass and some fine gravel.Hamilton to Coleraine
A walking and cycling trail along the former Hamilton to Coleraine railway (built in 1888, closed in 1977) through red gum country and open farmland, passing the Wannon Falls area. It is still a work in progress: the surface is the unsealed railway formation, so it suits walkers and mountain bikes better than road bikes.
Starts at the Balkins Road rail crossing on the outskirts of Hamilton and runs to Wannon-Nigretta Falls Road across working farmland; a second section starts on the Glenelg Highway near Wannon and finishes at the former Coleraine railway station in Whyte Street. There is a gap where the railway crossed the Wannon River, which forces riders onto the Glenelg Highway. Wannon Falls Reserve has toilets, picnic tables, barbecues and unpowered camping. Sources quote about 37km; the measured track is 39.8km.
