Mount Gambier Rail Trail

15.48 kmAsphalt (sealed).Mount Gambier (east) to Compton

Runs east to west through Mount Gambier, centred on the former rail yards and station, now parkland with railway memorabilia. A side trail links to Umpherston Sinkhole, and the main route splits to the west into two branches, one towards Wandilo and one towards Compton. Suits most riders, walkers and wheelchairs.

Telford Street to White Avenue (4.5km): behind the showgrounds and racing club, past the Railway Lands precinct, the old turntable and roundhouse site and a BMX/pump track. Side trail to Umpherston Sinkhole (1.2km), partly on the Princes Highway path. White Avenue to Wandilo Road (3km, the Adelaide line branch): light industrial and semi-rural land. White Avenue to Cafpirco Road (3km, the Millicent line branch): ends near the old Compton siding. The GPX includes the Wandilo branch ridden out and back. Free city bike hire is available in opening hours from the Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre, the Visitor Centre and the Library. A bakery is a few doors north of the trail at Pick Avenue. Take care at road crossings, especially the busy Princes Highway.
