The Riesling and Rattler Trails
51.16 kmExcellent compacted gravel throughout both trails - one of the best-maintained rail trail surfaces in the country, with kilometre marker posts (some faded) along the way. Suitable for hybrid and road bikes.Riverton to Barinia (via Auburn and Clare)
Two connected trails combining for one of South Australia's best-loved cycling experiences through the Clare Valley wine region and the rich farmland of the Mid North: the Riesling Trail (Auburn to Barinia, opened 1995, one of SA's first rail trails) and the Rattler Trail (Auburn to Riverton via Rhynie, opened 2010), joined at Auburn. Excellent compacted gravel surface throughout, gentle grades (around 1-1.5%). Seven townships and dozens of cellar doors sit on or just off the trail, including Sevenhill, Mr Mick, Tim Adams and O'Leary Walker wineries. The two trails have noticeably different characters: the Riesling Trail (Auburn-Clare-Barinia) runs through the heart of wine country with historic towns and tastings; the Rattler Trail (Auburn-Riverton) crosses open farming and dairy country with less inspiring but still pleasant scenery. Bike hire is available at multiple points, including one specifically for on-trail use only at Auburn.
Riverton to Auburn (Rattler Trail, approx. 19-20km): crosses open farming country via Rhynie. Auburn to Clare (Riesling Trail south, approx. 25km): through the heart of the Clare Valley wine region, past Leasingham, Watervale, Penwortham and Sevenhill, with numerous cellar doors on or near the trail. Clare to Barinia (Riesling Trail north extension, approx. 8km): continues north of Clare. A slight, steady climb heading north (Riverton to Penwortham direction) is easy going; the return south is described as 'a breeze'.
