Railton to Sheffield Rail Trail

12.71 kmCompacted earth, with some fine gravel on the old rail line.Railton to Sheffield

Follows part of the former Railton to Roland branch line, which ran from 1914 to 1957, through farmland and forest with views of Mount Roland near Sheffield. Part of the longer Tasmanian Trail. About an hour each way by mountain bike.

Railton end: access is on Railton Road, with a short bitumen section; a dirt road with a private property sign can be mistaken for the route. Middle: mostly off-road along the old corridor with good cuttings and embankments, a road crossing near the halfway point and a short single-track section of about 1km. Sheffield end: access is about 200m up Johnson Street, and may start with a muddy farm track. The surface is rough in places and grass can be long in summer. Signage is poor at both ends. The trail crosses private land, so leave gates as you find them. Steam train rides run from Sheffield station on the first Sunday of the month.
