Silverton to Broken Hill Rail Trail
27.52 kmRough, sandy trail surface with restored bridges on the approx. 10km open section near Silverton - mountain bike or gravel bike recommended. Sealed/unsealed roadway for the remainder of the route towards Broken Hill, since this section is not yet developed as off-road trail.Silverton to Broken Hill
Follows part of the historic Silverton Tramway (opened 1888, closed 1970), the narrow-gauge private railway that once linked the Broken Hill mines to the South Australian border. This entity covers the Silverton-Broken Hill section only (approx. 27.5km), on the land of the Wiljakali people, through classic red-dirt outback country - past Mundi Mundi Lookout country and film locations used in Mad Max II, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and other productions. IMPORTANT: as of this build, RTA reports only a roughly 10km section at the Silverton end is open, with a couple of small bridges restored for walkers and cyclists. The remaining stretch towards Broken Hill runs largely on private land with no formal trail development - RTA has been advised there are currently no plans to progress the rest of the trail further, due to lack of funding and no active friends group. Riders leaving from Broken Hill currently need to use roadway for approximately the first 15km before reaching the developed section. Built as one continuous entity per instruction, since this reflects how the full route is actually ridden end to end - see errata for detail.
Silverton to approx. 10km east (open, developed trail): restored bridges, off-road trail surface, rough and sandy in sections - mountain bike recommended. Remaining approx. 17-18km towards Broken Hill: largely undeveloped, mostly on private land, riders currently use roadway/shared road corridor rather than a dedicated off-trail path. Route passes red dirt gravel country typical of the Barrier Range, flat and open, connecting two pubs of historical interest - the Palace Hotel (Broken Hill) and the Silverton Hotel.
