Waranga Rail Trail
23.49 kmMostly gravel (blue metal and fine gravel), with hot-mix asphalt on the last 1km through the former Rushworth railyard.Murchison to Rushworth
Links the small towns of Murchison, on the Goulburn River, and Rushworth, a former gold-mining town. Almost flat through cropping country, past the Waranga Basin and the Doctors Swamp wetland, crossing several irrigation-channel bridges including a restored timber bridge over the Stuart Murray Canal. The Channel Inlet Road to Rushworth section opened in April 2025.
Starts at the dead end of Impey Street, Murchison (a shared path runs in from Murchison East station, with some road riding into town). Dismount to cross the narrow walkway on the Goulburn River bridge. Gravel to Channel Inlet Road, with a picnic area at Doctors Swamp, then a four-span bridge over the Waranga Basin. The last 1km runs on asphalt through the former Rushworth railyard to High Street, where the Rushworth Comfort Station has toilets, bike racks and parking. Take care crossing the busy Bendigo-Murchison Road and Murchison-Rushworth Road. Loose gravel in places, and wider tyres are recommended. Murchison has a bakery and a pub; Rushworth has cafes, a bakery, an ice creamery, a hotel and a motel.
