Kalamunda Railway Heritage Trail
16.97 kmCompacted earth and fine gravel, with some sealed road and single-track on the southern section.Pickering Brook to Kalamunda Zig Zag
Follows the former Upper Darling Range Railway, which carried timber sleepers from the Midland area up the Darling Scarp. The route takes in the Kalamunda Zig Zag, a historic switchback formation, and runs through the Kalamunda town centre and south-east towards Pickering Brook.
Southern section, Pickering Brook to Walliston: follows the railway alignment on a mix of gravel roads, sealed roads and single-track. It is only recommended for more confident riders. A recent upgrade has given walkers and cyclists separate sections. Northern section, Walliston to the Zig Zag: the formalised trail runs from near the former Walliston station through Kalamunda town centre to near the top of the Zig Zag. A news item from April 2020 reported a temporary closure of the Zig Zag scenic route; check with the City of Kalamunda before riding.
