Western Australia's rail trails follow the old goldfields and timber lines east and south of Perth. The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail loops through the Perth Hills on former railway formations, passing old station sites and jarrah forest within an hour of the city.
Surfaces are typically gravel and can be loose after rain or corrugated in summer, so wider tyres help. Distances between water points are longer than in the eastern states, and shade is patchy outside the forested sections.
Best time to ride: April to October; inland summer riding is hot and dry.
