Mary to Bay Rail Trail (Urban Section)

19.54 kmFully sealed the entire way - suitable for road bikes, hybrids, e-bikes, families and all fitness levels.Urangan to Nikenbah

The completed, sealed 'urban' section of the planned Mary to Bay Rail Trail, following the old Urangan railway line (reached Pialba 1896, extended to Urangan 1913, closed 1993) through the seaside city of Hervey Bay. Runs from the historic Urangan Pier (868m long, built 1913-1917) along the foreshore and through town to Nikenbah. High-quality sealed surface, popular with cyclists, runners and walkers, with cafes and restaurants increasingly opening up along the route. IMPORTANT: this section is currently NOT physically connected to the rural section further south (see GVRT-02-style sibling entity, Mary to Bay Rail Trail - Rural Section) - Fraser Coast Regional Council has not yet determined a safe crossing of the busy Hervey Bay-Maryborough Rd to join the two, so riders currently need to drive between them. Part of the same eventual 48km Maryborough-Hervey Bay vision when complete.

Urangan Pier to Nikenbah (approx. 19.5-20km): starts near the historic Urangan Pier, follows the foreshore shared path (also forms a scenic loop back to Pialba), passes through the built-up areas of Hervey Bay with an increasing number of cafes and restaurants, then continues inland to Nikenbah, where the sealed section currently ends near Piggford Lane.
