Mary to Bay Rail Trail (Rural Section)
10 kmCleared packed gravel transitioning to thicker bush track in places. Suitable for hybrid or mountain bikes; can flood in wet weather.Takura to Colton
The rural section of the planned Mary to Bay Rail Trail, opened in stages 2021-2023 by volunteers from the Fraser Coast Bicycle Users Group (FCBUG) working with Fraser Coast Regional Council. Runs from the Takura Trailhead (in the old Takura rail yards) through a unique 'wallum' heathland ecosystem with a range of native vegetation and birdlife, to Colton, just short of Maryborough. Horse riding is permitted on this section (unlike the urban section). IMPORTANT: this section is currently NOT physically connected to the urban/Hervey Bay section further north (see sibling entity, Mary to Bay Rail Trail - Urban Section) - there is no formal, safe crossing yet of the busy Hervey Bay-Maryborough Rd joining the two sections, so riders currently need to drive between them. A further extension from Colton into Maryborough itself is still in the planning/development stage, not yet built. Carry your own water - there are no facilities along this section except a shelter at Stockyard Creek.
Takura Trailhead to Colton (approx. 10-11km): begins at the old Takura rail yards, follows the disused rail corridor south through wallum heathland, past a shelter at Stockyard Creek (the only facility on this section), finishing near Colton, close to Maryborough. Can experience flooding in wetter weather.
