Railway Reserves Heritage Trail
59.42 kmFormed rail-trail surface throughout, generally good quality with some looser pea gravel and a few washouts on the southern/Mundaring side. Popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders (except through John Forrest National Park, where horses and dogs are excluded). Not many toilets along the way per rider reports - plan accordingly.Mount Helena, Bellevue loop, and on to Wooroloo
A comprehensive route through the Perth Hills tracing the old Eastern Railway (First Route via Mundaring opened 1884, Second Route via John Forrest National Park opened 1896). The network has a genuinely more complex shape than a typical point-to-point trail: between Bellevue and Mount Helena, TWO separate historic rail formations exist, forming a 40.8km loop when ridden via both, plus a further Eastern Extension continuing 18-22.5km from Mount Helena to Wooroloo. This recording captures the full network as one comprehensive ride: Mount Helena to Bellevue via the southern route (through Mundaring, passing Mundaring Sculpture Park), back to Mount Helena via the northern route (through John Forrest National Park, past the historic Swan View Tunnel - WA's oldest rail tunnel), then continuing the full Eastern Extension to Wooroloo. Passes through Darlington, Glen Forrest, Parkerville, Swan View, Sawyers Valley and Chidlow along the way. Horses and dogs are excluded from the John Forrest National Park section specifically. Connects with the Kep Track (see separate entity), Munda Biddi Trail, Bibbulmun Track and John Forrest Heritage Trail.
Mount Helena to Bellevue via Mundaring (approx. 22km, southern/First Route): passes through Sawyers Valley and Mundaring, including Mundaring Sculpture Park - a good rest/coffee stop roughly at this leg's midpoint. Bellevue to Mount Helena via John Forrest National Park (approx. 18km, northern/Second Route): the more scenic of the two loop directions, featuring the historic Swan View Tunnel (WA's oldest rail tunnel - bring a torch), seasonal waterfalls at National Park Falls and Hovea Falls, and passes through Glen Forrest, Darlington and Parkerville. Mount Helena to Wooroloo (approx. 18-22km, Eastern Extension): continues beyond the loop through Chidlow towards Wooroloo Regional Park and Lake Leschenaultia.
