New South Wales & ACTRail trails
5 trails · 6 sections mapped.
New South Wales spreads its rail trails a long way apart: subtropical cane country and rainforest in the Northern Rivers, coastal bushland around Newcastle, and cool high-country farmland near the Victorian border. Most are sealed or well-compacted gravel and follow old branch lines through small towns, so days can be planned around bakeries, pubs and country accommodation rather than remote camping.
Gradients are gentle by rail-trail standards, but the distances between towns vary widely. Northern Rivers and Hunter trails suit family rides and day trips, while the Snowy Valleys and inland lines reward riders happy to carry water between stops.
Best time to ride: March to November; inland summer days are hot and exposed.
