South Australia's rail trails are short, scenic and closely tied to food and wine. The Clare Valley's Riesling Trail is the best known, running between cellar doors on a smooth compacted surface, and it pairs naturally with the connecting Rattler Trail for a longer day. In the Adelaide Hills, the Amy Gillett Bikeway offers an easy sealed ride within reach of the city.
Because the trails are compact, most trips here are weekend-length rather than week-long, with a base in one town and out-and-back rides each day. Summer heat is the main constraint; spring and autumn are ideal.
Best time to ride: March to May and September to November.
